Elevating Everyday Living By Design
Your outdoor space has been on your to-do list since last May. You bought the furniture. You saved the photos. And yet here you are again, walking past the patio on the way to the car without a second thought.
Most homeowners I work with have all the pieces – they just don’t have a plan. Without one, even the most beautiful furniture ends up looking like a waiting room instead of a retreat. Here’s how to actually get it done this summer.
Tip 01 – Start With How You Want to Feel Out There
Before you think about furniture or planters, think about the feeling you’re chasing. Cozy and intimate? Resort-inspired? Your vibe is your foundation – everything else should ladder up to that feeling. When people skip this step, they end up with a mix of styles that feels off even when every individual piece is nice.
Try this: Pull 3-5 photos that make you feel exactly the way you want to feel outside. Not spaces you just like – spaces that make you feel something. That’s your direction.

Tip 02 – Treat Your Patio Like a Room
Your outdoor space isn’t a leftover area. It’s a room that happens to be outside – which means it needs the same things any great room needs: a defined layout, layers of lighting, a focal point, and a mix of textures. Arrange furniture to encourage conversation, layer your lighting, pick something for the eye to travel to first, and mix materials. Contrast is what makes a space feel designed.

Tip 03 – Invest in the Right Things First
Your seating and shade structure are worth spending on – you’ll use them every day and the quality difference is immediate. Pillows, side tables, and accent planters are where you can have fun without breaking the bank. And if you’re considering a pergola or deck, have a styling plan before you build. Structure without a style direction is an expensive guess.

Tip 04 – Don’t Underestimate Plants
Greenery does more work than almost any furniture piece when it comes to making a space feel alive. You don’t need a garden – you need strategic placement. A tall pot in the corner grounds the space vertically. A row of ornamental grasses creates privacy without a fence. Start with three plants in varying heights and go from there.

Tip 05 – Know When to Bring In Help
Sometimes the reason a space never gets finished isn’t a lack of effort – it’s a lack of a plan that connects all the decisions together. A designer gives you a roadmap so every dollar works toward something intentional and nothing gets wasted on pieces that don’t fit. If you’ve been circling your outdoor space for more than one season, it might be time to stop guessing.
